Star Wars Outlaws DLC - A Pirate's Fortune

Quest and Holistic level design

As part of the Star Wars Outlaws DLC, I worked as the Quest Designer on the main quest - Brave the Unknown.

As part of this experience I worked in two roles - I acted as a Holistic level designer for the Khepi Tomb Location during the early production and then as the Quest Designer for the first Main Quest of the DLC.

Senior Quest Designer responsibilities

  • Worked as a Quest Designer for the first main quest of the DLC - Brave the Unknown

  • Created, owned and delivered a holistic narrative and gameplay experience from paper design all the way to polished final content.

  • Requested features/props/animations needed for the quest and ensured there delivery

  • Designed the quest structure and implemented narrative elements such as the quests objectives, characters, realization and voice lines

  • Worked closely with level designers and environment artists to ensure constant alignment across the quest team.

  • Scripted and maintained the quest logic, implementing quest objectives, branching dialogues, AI/NPC behaviour and checkpoint systems.

  • Collaborated closely with Writers, Cinematic Designers, Producers and Animators to deliver the realization for the player experience

  • Created and maintained quest design documentation along with owning the requesting of assets needed for the quest.

  • Playtesting and fixing bugs to maintain fully playable quest throughout production and to ensure the highest quality player experience.

Holistic Level Designer responsibilities

  • During the early production of the DLC, I acted as the Holistic Level Designer

  • The Khepi Tomb location was one of our most ambitious levels in terms of scale, freedom of choice and quest replay-ability; because of that we had many Level and Environment Designers working on different parts of the same location and it was important we all stayed aligned

  • Along with the Holistic Environment Designer, Zack Parkinson, our role as part of the team, was to zoom out and ensure the various locations locked together nicely, coordinate changes with all the designers and ensure the locations being built worked for both quests

  • Along with coordinating with the team, I was also responsible for blocking out the early stages of the Hub and Landing Pad areas of the level, these two rooms were where all other spaces connect into. The Hub and the Landing pad were later taken over after early production by Henrik Sandin as I switched my focus to working on the Quest Design for Brave the Unknown.

Brave the Unknown

This is the first main quest in a Pirate's Fortune, Kay receives a mysterious message from Hondo Ohnaka asking her for aid in exchange for a great ancient treasure. In the previous quest, she has found Star Map Coordinates that she uses to travel to an unknown location. There she is captured by the Rokana Raiders, a group of pirates who have setup base in the Khepi tomb, looking to claim the same treasure promised to Kay. This quest follows Kay as she frees Hondo from the pirates, recovers her stolen gear and escapes the Khepi tomb.

Quest highlights:

  • Introduction of Hondo Ohnaka - a great character that acts as the catalyst of the DLC

  • Open quest structure - player has freedom to approach objectives and explore the Khepi tomb in any order they prefer

  • Gameplay subversion - The Pirates have stolen Kay's gear meaning during the quest she must recover her blaster and tools

Quest Design - Ronnie Tallon, Acke Hallgren

Level Design - Remi Salomon, Gregor De Weger, Henrik Sandin, Fredrik Levau

Environment Design - Wouter Gilloen, Zack Parkinson, Catherine Jonsson, Peter Kostov, Joel Westman
